L.A. Opera

This year, Rooms 9 and 10 were fortunate to have the In-School Elementary Opera Program in residence at Balboa.  This enriching program is sponsored by the Los Angeles Opera Company and benefits schools around the LAUSD each year.  The two-brother team of Eli and LeRoy Villanueva create operas for children using the music and subject matter from actual operas; Eli composes the music and LeRoy writes the libretto, or the lyrics, for the operas.  This year, the brothers adapted "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini and set it in Monterey, California, to illustrate the experience of Chinese immigrants in Northern California.  From five rehearsals with teaching artists, the children learned breathing and singing techniques, as well as extensive information about the unique characteristics of the art form that is opera. In addition to the experience on campus, students and their families traveled to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to see "The Magic Flute" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  The entire experience was paid for with a generous grant from the FEDCO Corporation.

Jog-A-Thon

IMG_3613.jpgBalboa scholars all participated in our annual Jog-A-Thon.  Everyone came out to run, jog, and walk to earn money for Balboa.  Coach Kelly, Mr. Rubicel, and Mrs. Davenport inspired us all by running with each grade level.  All participants received a medal for their efforts.  Everyone tried their best and had a great time!  Click here to view more pictures. Click here to see more pictures.
