Ducklings Discover the Pond

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

The boys and girls in Mrs, Thorlakson’s class have been raising ducklings for the past few weeks.  On most afternoons the class takes their feathered friends out to the pond for a quick swim.  Afterwards the ducks follow the class back to their holding pen where they have plenty of room to stretch their wings.

Make Way for Ducklings

Approximately 20 ducklings (Mallard & Pekin) can be found on our campus waddling around.  The ducklings are part of a third grade science project on the Life Cycle.  The boys and girls in the participating classes monitored their development for 28 days before they hatched over Mother’s Day weekend.  Mr. Passavanti, a.k.a. “Daddy Duck”, pictured above has been assisting our teachers in caring for the baby ducks.

One of the many projects our third grade students have completed as part of their Life Cycle unit is a writing assignment in which students explain how they will care for the ducklings.  Below is an entry by one of our young duck loving students.

Dear Mrs. Thorlakson,

I feel that I can be a good parent for a duck because it will have all that it needs.  I will check on its food and water everyday to make sure that it has enough.  It will be in a cozy room really warm and it will have a family who loves and cares for it.  I also don’t want to be cruel to the duck, so when it is old enough, I will release it.  I will try my hardest to make this duck happy and I think it just might happen.  I have waited and watched the processing of all of the eggs and I have talked to them everyday too.  And that is why I think that I can be a good parent for a duck.

Sincerely,

Zoe
